All concrete shrinks as it dries. This shrinkage commonly results in cracks. The amount of shrinkage is typically 1/16th an inch over a 10 foot span. All driveways and patios are saw-cut after being poured to encourage the concrete to crack in a controlled straight line.
Watering the concrete days after being poured really helps for the moisture in the concrete to evaporate more slowly. It’s suggested to water the concrete 5 to 10 times per day (or as often as possible) for the first seven days. Flooding the concrete does not work all year and is not recommended in cold weather.
Wait at least 24 hours before allowing foot traffic, including pets. For driveways, don’t drive on the concrete for at least 10 days for regular passenger cars. Heavy trucks and RVs should wait until the concrete reaches full strength at 28 days.
For driveways: 4.5 – 5″ reinforced with wire mesh or rebar.
For patios and sidewalks: 4″ reinforced with wire mesh or rebar.
Yes! Salt damages concrete.
It is corrosive and can increase the risk of spalling/pitting or other problems. If safety is an issue, there are alternative solutions like sand, kitty litter and calcium chloride.
